Network Bloom
Intro
My second game jam (first one here) and I decided to step way above my comfort zone and try a bigger game in Unity this time (which I have spent the last couple of months learning). So I shot for the moon, didn't even leave the Earth's atmosphere, but learned a lot about scope, priorities, and time management when working on my own projects - in other words, all the things I already know about and even advise others on in my professional role as a senior software developer, but for some reason completely ignore when I'm working alone. Oh the irony and the arrogance.
The Idea
The game itself was not something I had any idea of before the game jam started, I decided to let myself be guided solely by the theme (Connections). I'm a big fan of incremental games, so the very rough idea of energy generating nodes that connect to each other to generate even more energy was all I had when I started. The intention was to have the connections between the nodes desire an ideal distance (to prevent the player just clustering them all right next to each other) and somehow show that to the user (probably through the colour of the connection - but that never properly materialised, sadly.
How To Play
Click anywhere on the screen to place a node. A node will tick over time and generate more energy, which will allow you to place more nodes. Nodes placed close to each other will create connections that will increase the energy each connected node generates.
Thanks
Big thanks of course to GameDev.tv for hosting the game jam, but also for their wonderful courses that have been teaching me Unity and Blender. Everything in the game is made by me, with the exception of the font which is Inversionz by HawtPixel. No generative AI was used in development of this game.

As disappointed as I am that I didn’t get nearly as far in the game as I wanted, I do take solace in having learned a lot getting to where I did - so there is a silver lining for me at least.
